Technically, Yes
The iPhone XR is water-resistant and has a rating of IP67, which means the device will be fine if you accidentally drop it in the toilet, pool, bath, or in the sea, it will be fine. IP67 is okay but the gold standard for water-proofing is IP68. So, yes your device will be okay in water for a short period of time, but ultimately you do not want to push the issue if not needed, because it’s only waterproof within certain parameters.
IP67 Explained
Many are probably curious as to what IP67 is or what it means, so here is a more thorough explanation! Water and dustproof connectivity products are defined by their (IP) Ingress Protection numbers. The first number after IP is for the part’s protection against solid objects like dust and sand. This number can range from 0, meaning no protection against dust and sand, and 6, meaning 100% protection against dust and sand. The second number after IP is for the part’s protection against liquids. It ranges from 0 to 8. IP67 equipment is the most commonly found in the connectivity market. It is 100% protected against solid objects like dust and sand, and it has been tested to work for at least 30 minutes while under 15cm to 1m of water.
IP67 and The iPhone XR
As stated above, IP ratings refer to multiple aspects of protection for the device. These would be considered protection from sand and other materials such as dust, and then also it can only withstand so much exposure to water; up to 30 minutes in depths of water one meter or less. So, with that being said, the iPhone XR is not 100% waterproof. We would not recommend taking your iPhone XR to sea or swimming, the IP67 is there more so for accidents, like dropping the device in a puddle, or in your drink, something where the exposure isn’t too great.
Is the iPhone XR Waterproof?
To sum it all up, you are protected within reason with the IP67, meaning that as long as your device isn’t exposed for too long in water and beyond 1 meter deep, it will not kill your iPhone XR. However, if you do leave it exposed for prolonged times, you do run the risk of breaking your iPhone XR.
